Celebrating the Year of Slovak Music
From 22 September to 8 October 2023, the 58th Bratislava Music Festival is transforming the Slovakian capital into the regional epicentre of quality international and traditional Slovak music. The programme of the 58th Bratislava Music Festival presents a rich offer of Slovak compositions, orchestras and performers. The festival reflects the Year of Slovak Music proclaimed by the Ministry of Culture, aiming to popularise Slovak music.
This year, visitors can take pleasure in listening to the works of Slovak masters like Ján Levoslav Bella and Alexander Moyzes, who celebrate their jubilees this year. In more than half a century, the Bratislava Music Festival has become a jewel among the European music festivals. Every year, its rich programme features both Slovak and foreign music, thus representing a vital component of the development of Slovak music tradition.
Continuing the rich Slovak music tradition
The Bratislava Music Festival is Slovakia’s best-known and most prestigious international festival, which has become a regular autumn event in Bratislava since it was established in 1964. Starting in 1973, it has been the only Slovak representative in the Brussels-based European Festivals Association.
The Bratislava Music Festival aims to present prominent Slovak and foreign music ensembles and soloists and Slovak music production. Within two weeks, over 25 symphonic and chamber concerts are held, including a number of first-night performances of works by Slovak and foreign composers. For more than half a century, the festival in Bratislava has represented the most significant celebration of music taking place in Slovakia.
Till the end of the festival, attendees can still listen to the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Opera Orchestra of the National Theatre Košice. Highlights of this year’s festival included the Filarmonica della Scala, Dresden Philharmonic, B’Rock Orchestra and the Notos Quartett.
The festival is one of the most important international events in the Slovakian capital. Its acclaim is crucial in attracting a global audience to Bratislava and helping it cement its position as a festival outpost.
