P. O. Hviezdoslav City Theatre
The Municipal Theater of Pavel Országh Hviezdoslav is the artistic scene of the city with plays also in English and other cultural programme.
DPOH is an art scene with its own repertoire, a place of important events in the field of culture and education, an open space for inventive art projects, discussions, workshops, festivals. DPOH’s program offer consists of its own productions, which are complemented by co-production performances and guest theaters.
It is located in the former building of the Slovak National Bank on the corner of Laurinská and Štúrová Streets, built between 1943 and 1947. The project arose out of a public tender for a bank building and chamber theater. The winners of the competition were architects Ing. arch. Eugen Kramár and Ing. arch. Štefan Lukačovič. In 1944, they completed the rough construction, and then only the construction of the bank part continued.
In 1948, it was decided to assign the building to the Slovak National Theater and the building began to be equipped with theater equipment. Artist František Gajdoš is responsible for the original decoration of the auditorium, foyers and curtain. The mosaic windows in the foyer were created by the prominent Slovak painter Janko Alexy. Construction was completed in 1955.
On the ground floor of the theater you will also find a Theater Kiosk, where you can find theater merchandise, coffee and more 2 p.m. – 7 p.m. and always one hour before the performance.
