Kern House
Kern House stands on the corner of Rybárska brána (Fisherman’s Gate) and Hviezdoslavovo Square. Fisherman’s Gate was one of the four entrances to the mediaeval city (the others being Lawrence’s, Michael’s and the Vydrická Gate).
In the 18th century Empress Maria Theresa ordered the gates to be demolished along with the city walls in order to allow the city to grow, but the remains of Fisherman’s Gate is now visible under a glass cover in front of the Opera House. This inventive presentation of an archaeological find was awarded a 2002 Europa Nostra Cultural Heritage Preservation Prize.
