The magic of nightly Bratislava will be once again enhanced by the White Night
You will not sleep these nights, guaranteed
Illuminated skyscrapers, huge glowing moon, animated animals roaming the streets, raining human fingers, forest full of lights, composition of containers, audiovisual comet, magic beanstalk, light and musical elements revived former legendary Jalta bar, monumental matryoshka, light crown on the Michael’s Tower, statue from bathroom bathtubs or luminous haunted house of Romero. Simply a magical night walk through contemporary art.
The largest and most visited international festival of contemporary art has become an integral part of the capital. For the thirteenth time, the fantastic White Night will bring a unique atmosphere to both the largest Slovak cities. It returns in spectacular style and brings resounding names from three continents of the world.
One of the most beautiful autumn events in Bratislava let you experience an untraditional artistic walk through the night city, full of impressions and new perceptions.
The festival brings again a manifold program. During the day and night time, it takes you to new locations and presents up to 53 stops with works by top foreign and domestic artists. Many of them can be enjoyed from Friday to Sunday. Also this year, you will experience a magical walk through the city for art and see your favorite places through a different lens.
This year’s White Night again lasts three days and three nights. You will thus be able to see most of the works when it suits you best, or enjoy them confortably more than once.
According to experience, the biggest crowd of visitors in the city centre is from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. To avoid the crowd, start from the outskirts and come to the centre gradually. That is why the festival program lasts up to three days. In addition, some installations remain in the city longer and can be viewed even after the White Night.
Create your own route. You don’t need to follow the numbers chronologically when walking through the city. The order is up to you. The vast majority of works will be available on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between 7 p.m. and midnight. In addition, you can save your favorites by tapping the heart icon in the White Night app. The White Night is also thinking of a child viewer. This year it also brings a special programme for children. However, there are also a few exceptions in the programme that are not suitable for children.
The genre-rich programme of the White Night brings dozens of innovative works and installations from renowned artists from the domestic and foreign scene to Bratislava. In addition to Slovak snd Czech authors, you can look forward to works from Germany, Austria, Japan, Canada, France, Hungary, Belgium, Great Britain or New Zealand.
A new point on the festival map this year is the New Market Hall on Trnavské mýto, which will experience a unique laser mapping. Eurovea Tower, the first real Slovak skyscraper, will also appear in the premiere programme.
This year, many installations present elements of interaction, a new media approach and often a follow-up to other professional disciplines, including neuroscience, psychology, physics or robotics. However, always with an authorial approach, diverse poetics of contemporary art and in a spectator-attractive form.
Undoubtedly, popular artistic interventions in the public space are light installations that breathe a new form into the night city and enrich the urban relief with an unusual layer of lights, colours and geometry. In Bratislava, many elements of lighting design are concentrated on the festival Water Route by the Danube.
You can also become a part of several works yourself. Interactive installations and objects responsive to your movement can be found in different parts of the city. You can dance the facade of the high-rise building of the National Bank of Slovakia, project the rhythm of your body onto the New building of the Slovak National Theatre, become a drummer on the Pink Whale boat, enjoy your reflection in the mirror in the Umelka Gallery, become a singer and conductor in the Mirror Hall of the Primate’s Palace, or have the robot paint your portrait in the courtyard of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic.
The White Night, a prestigious international art project, aims to bring contemporary forms of art as well as unconventional, unknown and important places of European metropolises to the general public. In Slovakia, it started in Košice and after several years of success the festival decided to expand to Bratislava. Thanks to hundreds of thousands of visitors who, despite the bad weather, decided to experience contemporary art in the streets of the capital, the pilot year saw a huge interest.
The diverse offer of different artistic genres will guarantee everyone to get to know the latest trends in various artistic disciplines. Alongside art, visitors will discover interesting and unconventional spaces that will exceptionally accommodate contemporary forms of art, such as courtyards, parks, stations, bridges, waterfronts, swimming pools, shopping centers, parking lots, private spaces and various places that are usually inaccessible to people.
White Night embodies the desire to (re)discover urban environment which is given a new dimension through art. A city is transformed into an interactive space whose usual nocturnal cycle ceases to exist for a few hours. Contemporary art breathes life into the city at night and the night thus becomes “white”.
Do not miss the magical walk through the city in an unusual dress and come to the next edition of the White Night, the largest international festival of contemporary art in Slovakia. Create together the longest night of the year that will brighten the city with art for three whole days.
