Towards Transregional Art Histories

Symposium accompanying the exhibition Haptic Echo. Nature, Body, Politics in the Art of the Former Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia at the Bratislava City Gallery.

The symposium consists of lectures and discussions devoted to regional art history and transregional research in the field of art of the second half of the 20th century. It builds on the exhibition Haptic Echo, which accentuates environmental motifs in art from the 1960s to the 1990s and confronts the parallel, though often intertwined, narratives of art from two modern European federations – Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. The symposium will address issues of mutual contacts and friendly exchanges that led to an aesthetics of defiance and the emergence of collective platforms. The ambition of the symposium is to discuss the legacies of radical artistic practices, to highlight the little-known contexts of the politics of multiethnic cultural spaces, and to bring the phenomenon of minority cultures into focus.

The symposium is open to students as well as the public, and the language of discussion will be English.
