The Winter’s Tale
A fantasy story of betrayal, love and forgiveness. The long and the short of it, a true fairy tale
The second sentence of the lead paragraph was deliberately written in Czech in the original Slovak version of this text. Not only will this play be in Czech language, but the second half of its storyline takes place in the Shakespearean version of Bohemia. It’s a seaside country. We’re in a fairy tale.
Do you ever get the feeling that everyone around you is pretending and lying? That even a loved one can’t be trusted? What if everything is different and you’re wrong? Can you admit your guilt and your mistake? And is it even possible to reveal the truth? Death, cruelty or jealousy simply belong in Shakespeare’s works, whether we like it or not.
However, there is something else in this play – a lesson. We are not to judge without verifying the facts properly. The fairy tale of devastating jealousy, hope and miracles was set by William Shakespeare in Sicily and Bohemia, surprisingly devoting the sea to this country. Drama alternates with comedy, hatred with love, and rejection with forgiveness.
With the fairy tale story translated into Czech by Martin Hilský and directed by Pavel Khek, you can get carried away into the realm of fantasy during the Summer Shakespeare Festival every day from 3 to 6 August. Performances in the courtyard of the Bratislava Castle start at exactly at 8:30 p.m., lasting with a break approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes.
