Slovak Clay Nativity Scene

In the largest restaurant in Central Europe, you will find a clay Bethlehem with 365 figures from saints to traditional Slovak crafts and with models of the most important Slovak castles and chateaux in the background.

Walk through the whole of Slovakia in just a few minutes. You will find landmarks from east to west, from the castle in Stará Ľubovňa to the Cathedral of St. Martin in Bratislava. There are 12 castles in total, 20 churches and chapels, and you will also find plaques of castle ruins, mountain peaks in Orava and national parks. 1,500 kilograms of clay were used to make it.

The figures in the bottom row depict, from left to right, saints associated with Slovakia, with the nativity scene in the middle and other figures of saints on the right edge. Around the scenes from the nativity scene, you will find depictions of acts of mercy, virtues and sins in the form of other clay figures. On purpose, can you recognize them?

The figures in the middle and top rows are colorfully painted and you can clearly see the costumes from different parts of Slovakia. In the middle row you will find traditional crafts and activities from reapers and fishermen to gingerbread makers and puppeteers to goose and goose-cutters. In the top row you can see typical life events but also typical customs, including gossip.

You can see the nativity scene for free.
