Architect Dedeček

The Slovak National Gallery is dedicating a double exhibition to “its” architect Vladimír Dedeček (1929 – 2020), creator of great concepts and almost a hundred realisations, an important co-author of the architectural form of modern Slovakia. Dedeček was also the architect of the recently renovated Slovak National Gallery building on the embankment.

The first, cross-sectional exhibition Vladimír Dedeček – Past and Present, curated by Monika Mitášová, will present not only biographical data, projects and buildings, but also the spaces Dedeček created and their contexts. It can also be seen as another part of the discussion on the author’s architectural thinking, work and its interpretation, which Monika Mitášová started in her comprehensive publication in 2017. In addition, the question of how to exhibit architecture will also be relevant for the curator.

The second part, entitled Vladimír Dedeček and the Slovak National Gallery: a story from the future in the conception of Alexandra Kusej, dedicated to the grounds of the Slovak National Gallery, combines an exhibition of architecture with institutional “archaeology”. You will find out what information has been traditionally about the SNG building and what the reality is, you will understand the building of the institution and its headquarters as part of the modernisation process, but also the rebirth of Bratislava as a young metropolis.

The construction of the Slovak National Gallery was, not only in its time, perceived controversially. The strong architectural concept was conditioned by two personalities – the director of the National Gallery Karol Vaculík and Vladimír Dedeček, its architect. How was the idea of expanding the SNG pursued, in what political and social context did its protagonists have to operate? Who and with what projects competed and how did the winning one develop? Why was the Bridging finally realised and why did it struggle for so long with its reception? What did the project mean to the gallery and what did it mean to its architect?

The exhibition immerses you in the world of the architect or – as Dedeček himself referred to himself – “a carpenter in the time of concrete”.
