The Kráľová Reverly

Festive mood and entertainment will offer a feast fit for the king in Kráľová neighborhood of townlet of Modra on the first Saturday of June. The meeting of generations in a well-known wine-growing town will bring gastronomic, artistic and musical pleasures, test skilful hands and provide space for relaxation and reflection.

Kráľová has been a part of the town of Modra since time immemorial, but it retains its rural character and traditions. The dialect spoken of in Kráľová is distinctive and the locals honour their history and still cultivate folk customs there. Traditionally, reverlies were held here twice a year, in spring and autumn. The spring edition was also called salad feasting or whitsun farthing feasts. Before they took place, in the past, preparations included a lot of tidying up, cooking and baking that the Kráľová would well entertain the Modra bailies and all visitors. Popular spring feasting is characterized by an abundance of good food and wine, cheerful music and dance.

This year’s feast in front of the cultural house in Kráľová (and in case of unfavourable weather conditions in its interior) will be accompanied by a Cake Festival and a traditional baking competition for all housewives and bakers. There will also be Modra style “frkacúle”, allegorical procession representing the life of the inhabitants and children from Friday to Sunday will enjoy merry-go-rounds.

Starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 4th, the “Royal pastry-cook” competition will begin. It is usually a fight for the best bunt cake, the tastiest stuffed buns or the coolest sourdough strudel. This year, you have the opportunity to participate in the competition in the roasting of pogachas. These can be of sour, cottage cheese, potato or cracklings flavour and of any size. Baked pogachas must be handed over at the Kráľová Culture House from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. After they’ve been evaluated by the jury, the results will be announced by 4 p.m.

At the feasting, you can be enlightened in the preparation of “splashers”, i.e. traditional pastes of Kráľová. Between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m, you can sit with women from the Kráľovan civic association at their common table, join in the work and debate and learn how to prepare pastes for the festal soup. So come and try how to properly “splash” pastes of Kráľová.

In addition to the Splasher School, take the time for an unconventional walk through the Green Forest. The local evangelical congregational parish priest Sidónia Horňanová, who initiated the creation of the memorial, will be pleased to guide those interested through a unique place of remembrance during the reverly festivities at 2 p.m., 5:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. On Národná Street in Kráľová there was a shop near the church, where everyone used to shop. During the war, however, the shop was closed, the property of Jakub Grünwald and his family was aryanizationed, and the father with five children and their families were dragged to concentration camps, where they all died. On the place where the shop once stood, on the initiative of the Congregation Modra-Kráľová of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Slovakia, a transparent steel structure fouling with vine has been built. The original ruin thus turns into a “living” wall changing in time, a symbolic link to the changing fate of the original house and its owners. The ongoing exhibition “Humans of Fusion” completes the pious atmosphere of the place.

As part of the accompanying programme of festivities, on Sunday at 9 a.m. you can traditionally choose either the Roman Catholic service in the St. Michael Chapel or the evangelical Service of God with the Lord’s Supper in the Evangelical Church in Modra-Kráľová. Modra is always good. Go and see that the reverly in Kráľová is truly royal.
