EASTER CONCERT
In the year 1779 the life coordinates of Joseph Haydn have considerably changed. In the new contract his patron Nicolas Esterházy allowed him to compose also for other purposes, as only for the noble residences in Esterháza and Eisenstadt. The skilful businessman Haydn began fully to take advantage of this possibility; in the year 1785 representatives of the impressive cave cathedral Oratorio de la Santa Cueva in Spanish Cádiz addressed him in the matter of the Easter orchestra project The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross. After the premiere in 1786 Haydn revised this reflexive piece three times, whereby the settings for string quartet, solo, choir and orchestra and finally for solo piano came into being.
