Mýty a fakty o staroegyptských medených nástrojoch

It is only research in recent years and decades, combining Egyptology with the methods of the natural sciences, that allows us to understand how ancient Egyptian technology, specifically metal tools, functioned in the society of the time – from pyramid building to carpentry. The lecture will present the results of a postdoctoral project conducted at the University of Newcastle, UK, under the supervision of Prof. Andrea Dolfini and was awarded under the Marie Curie-Sklodowska Actions of the Horizon Europe Programme. The project focused on the unprecedentedly detailed documentation of preserved ancient Egyptian metal tools in the collections of British, European and American museums, as well as new material from expeditions operating in Egypt, with the chemical composition of the artefacts analysed by Ing. Jiří Kmošek. Experiments with replica instruments were carried out as part of a project in Australia in collaboration with the Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney and its curator Dr. Melanie Pitkin.

Dr. Martin Odler is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Newcastle, UK and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Aigyptos Foundation. His research focuses on ancient Egyptian material culture, especially copper artefacts, but also on the reflection of ancient Egypt in Slovak culture and literature.

The event is organised by the Gedíd Aigyptos Foundation and the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

Tickets on sale only at the Old Town Hall box office.
