Carnival or Fašiangy in and around Bratislava

Immerse yourself in the joyful and colourful traditions of Fašiangy, a vibrant prelude to the sombre days of Lent. Come to Bratislava to make your masks, join the procession, dance until dawn, taste Fašiangy doughnuts, and learn more about this merry season.

Join the carnival

The main part of the programme will be a carnival procession through the Bratislava streets held on Saturday, March 1 2025. Every city resident or visitor can join in the procession, ideally in costume – as an individual or in a group. Masked participants of the procession will also be able to enter a competition for the best costume, to be chosen by an expert panel.

Angel wings, doughnuts, dumplings

Carnival is a time to eat special oily and sweet doughnuts, try to find it in one of the many cafés or in an inconspicuous window on Obchodná Street 69. Greasy stuffed pirozhki that are available all year round, not just during the Fašiangy season. For decades, this little window and its delectable pastries have been an essential part of Bratislava life! The pirozhki filling varies every day, walnut, poppy seeds, plum jam, or cream cheese.

Burying the bass

Be there for the final stage of the Fašiangy season and experience burying the bass in city district Rača. The closing of the Fašiangy season will also be celebrated in all corners of the Bratislava region. You can experience bass burial in style, for example, in Pezinok.

Dance with Bratislava

At the event Traditional House of Dances edition Fašiangy Dance you can experience showcasing the skills and talent of professional dancers, who will teach you beautiful Slovak dances. If you are not so much into dancing come and admire at least traditional masks!

Fun fact: Traditionally, Fašiangy were celebrated for three days.
